Xavi Sacked by Barcelona After Three Years
Xavi Announces Departure in January
Barcelona have sacked manager Xavi Hernandez after three years in charge. The Spaniard announced in January that he would be leaving the club at the end of the season, but his departure has been brought forward following a 5-3 home defeat by Villarreal on January 27.
Fallout of Villarreal Defeat
In the aftermath of the defeat, Xavi described Barcelona's performance as "unacceptable" and said that he took "full responsibility" for the result. However, it is understood that the club's hierarchy were not satisfied with Xavi's explanation and decided to terminate his contract with immediate effect.
Xavi's Success at Barcelona
Xavi, an absolute legend at Barcelona, is a graduate of the club's famed youth system and has gone on to manage the senior team with great success. Under his leadership, Barcelona won the Copa del Rey in 2021 and the La Liga title in 2023. However, the team has struggled for consistency this season and currently sits 10th in the La Liga standings.
Replacement Rumors
Barcelona's search for Xavi's replacement is already underway. Former Bayern Munich and Germany manager Hansi Flick is widely expected to be appointed as the new head coach. Flick, who left Bayern at the end of last season, has a proven track record of success and is seen as the ideal candidate to turn around Barcelona's fortunes.
